Welcome To The 2021 Season!

Hello everyone and welcome to the 2021 season. I hope you were all able to enjoy a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Your dedicated committee has been hard at work behind the scenes preparing for the new season with the anticipation of it being a “normal season” compared to 2020.

We all know the 2020 season was shortened and testing to say the least with the restrictions put upon us through COVID-19, I am hopeful we won’t see a repeat of this again into the future. In saying that, I remind you that your committee was well prepared to have the season underway the minute we were given the green light by our Premier and the City of Wanneroo. For those who didn’t know, WJFC was one of the first clubs to hit the training track in 2020. We were able to get the players out on the grounds immediately as we had put in place all the requirements issued by WA Health, in terms of sanitizers, player registers, training attendance registers etc. well in advance of many other clubs and sporting associations.

Briefly, in 2020, we had 4 of our open’s teams finishing third on the ladder with one finishing second but delegated to third due to red and yellow card incidences. We saw our girls and some junior teams get to play half time games at HBF Stadium in Joondalup under the West Perth Football Club banner. We had two Northern Conference Award nominations, Glenn Brigg for Mods coach of the year and Sharee Chitty for Auskick Coordinator of the year, which is a major achievement. We saw the opening of our new changerooms and canteen at Edgar Griffiths Park, which hosted a below average amount of games but none the less, having a warm coffee and chips and gravy for breakfast can’t be missed. Hopefully we see more games fixtured there this season.

Finally, for the 2020 season we have seen some committee changes leading onto the 2021 season. Chrysilla Genovese has stood down as Treasurer but will remain in the general committee. We have seen the retirement of Jules and her sidekick Jess from the canteen(s) and both will be sorely missed but you will catch glimpses of our beloved Jules late in the afternoons on Sunday when her son Cooper is playing in the under 18’s. Our numbers for the 2020 season were around 650 members, which is great for our club as we consistently seem to hover around this number each year.

Season 2021

2021 sees a couple of new faces on the committee and hopefully you will all get to meet these guys who I am confident will well and truly exceed our expectations.

Our new treasurer is Dean Lafrenais. Dean is not new to the committee as he has been involved previously in Marketing and Sponsorship and was the backbone in our organizing Drag Queen Bingo last year.

Emily Talbot, sister to Pat Talbot, out VP, has kindly taken on the role of Social Media (FB), Mailchimp to get all the latest updates out to our members and managing our website with all the latest fixtures, news stories, rule changes and updates for contacts etc. If you have a news story you would like to share, look Emily up or email her at emily.wjfc@gmail.com.

Finally, we have a new canteen Manager Emily Guildea. Emily has mountains of experience in catering and is looking forward to the challenge of filling your tummy and tickling your taste buds during the course of the season, and yes……. Jules has passed on the “Gravy Recipe”.

For anyone else wanting to jump on and lend a hand we are currently looking for a “Girls Coordinator” and have some general committee openings, please don’t be shy, give Michelle Partridge a call on 0439 336 834.

Registrations are open, we have seen many take advantage of the early bird discount which is wonderful to see. There has been a change to Auskick registrations with a new platform “player HQ”, this is for Auskick only as it is a precursor for a possible whole of sport role out next season. For Auskick, registrations my understanding is you will be redirected through Sports TG or simply register through the Auskick portal. All mods and opens registrations are remaining in “sports TG”. With registrations, if you have any friends who would like to join and take part, please direct them to our web page – www.wanneroojuniorfootballclub.net.au where they can follow the links. Girls especially, we would love to grow our numbers so come on down and have a try.

Shortly we will be announcing upcoming events such as social, coaches meeting, bounce down for all coaches and managers, etc. We will have a date very soon for the Wanneroo/Bayswater cup, which is an annual scratch match that kicks off the season and is open to year 7 – year 10 teams. Wanneroo will be hosting this year. Other important dates:

Expressions of interest are now open for coaches for the 2021 season. Coaches play an important role not only in sporting life, but also the everyday life of the players they coach.  They influence not only the development of football skills and performance but the development of our boys and girls as people and their approach to other aspects of their life.

Wanneroo Junior Football Club Committee invites aspiring and current coaches to express interest in coaching roles for all teams in Juniors (Years 3 – 6), Youth (Years 7 – 12) and Junior and Youth Girls (Years 3 – 12) in 2021. We welcome interest from within and external to the Club and from our older male and female players (current and former) who may be interested in learning the ropes or teaching us older guys some new tricks.

An annual application process is in place to:

  • ensure we have the best coaches for Wanneroo Junior Football Club teams to develop our players in a positive football environment; and
  • enable all parents and interested parties have an opportunity to coach Wanneroo Junior Football Club teams.

The Club’s Football Department will review all applications and be in touch to discuss your interest further and arrange any interviews, if required.

For all opens players, both male and female, our pre-season group training will commence 9th February 2021, this is compulsory, and NO TEAMS are permitted to train separately. This is because we are trying to a) build the club mentality that we are all part of the same team, b) group fitness and c) mentoring of junior players by senior players. We shall send out final information soon so watch our website, Facebook page and Mailchimp news feeds.

Finally, I look forward to leading the club and addressing the many challenges we face along the way. Footy is certainly now back in the minds and hearts of all our committee and we look forward to developing our club, our game and most of all our players for the short- and long-term future. If you have anything you wish to discuss, please give me a call after 4pm any day.

Go Roos season 2021.
